The Kewagama property is located in the Abitibi region in northwestern Québec, on provincial highway 117, about halfway between the towns of Rouyn Noranda and Val-d’Or. This property is also contiguous with the O’Brien property of Radisson located immediately to the west. Gravel roads provide easy access to the properties.

Exploration on the property began in 1928 with trenching and drilling by Cartier Malartic Gold Mines. The property changed hands several times since that time. In 1931, a shaft was sunk to the 125-foot level and 1,500 feet of development were completed on that level. The Kewagama shaft is located approximately 4,800 feet east of the No. 2 shaft of the old O’Brien Mine.

In 1936, company Kewagama Gold Mines Ltd. was formed. It deepened the shaft to 525 feet and carried out development on four levels (125-, 250-, 375- and 500-foot levels). An internal shaft was sunk 220 vertical feet from the 4th level (500-foot) and three sub-levels were developed (550-, 600- and 700-foot levels).

In 1939, all work stopped due to World War II. The ore produced by the development, which amounted to about 2,273 short tons, was processed in 1940 and produced 790.7 ounces of gold, with a recovered grade of 0.347 oz/st. (Glover, 1988)

In 1964, 1,000 feet of surface drilling were carried out to check the extension of the Winze Zone toward the surface.

In 1973–1974, surface exploration resumed and efforts focused in the eastern extension of the infrastructure and north of the Cadillac Break, to explore the iron formation’s environment, which had been productive on adjacent properties to the east: Wood-Central and Pandora.  Subsequently, 13 holes totalling 1,349 feet were drilled. The results were considered encouraging and justified underground work.

In 1976, A.N. Ferris acquired control of the property. In 1977, the mine site was cleared, surface infrastructure was built and the mine was dewatered. This work was completed in 1979.

In 1980, St. Joseph Exploration Ltd. took control of the property. The shaft was expanded to three compartments down to the 2nd level. In 1981, Sulpetro Minerals Ltd. (which became Novamin, then Breakwater and then Nyrstar) deepened the shaft to 1,159 feet and finished preparing ore and waste passes between the 7th and 4th levels. Thirty-one surface holes totalling 15,807 feet were also drilled.

Development was carried out on levels 6 and 7 and, in 1982, the Winze Zone was mined, producing 12,500 short tons with a grade of 0.38 oz/st of gold (Glover, 1988). Production continued on the Q, R and S veins until 1983, when operations were suspended.

In 1988, Breakwater Resources Ltd. (later Nyrstar) drilled four holes totalling 3,234 feet (986 metres) in the western part of the property.

In 1999, Radisson acquired a 100% interest in the property.

From 2003 to 2011, Radisson carried out several exploration drilling programs on the Kewagama property. They were intended to test the following:

  • The mineralization and geological setting of gold-bearing structures in the area of the old Kewagama mine
  • The continuity of O’Brien-type structures between 36E area and the Kewagama shaft
  • The potential at a depth of over 1,000 metres, on the western edge of the property
  • The potential of the area east of the Kewagama mine infrastructure, where historical drilling had intersected significant gold values in rocks of the Piché Group
  • Gold intersections cut in 1974 and 1981, in the iron formation environment in the Cadillac Group

North Zone – Cadillac Group

The 2006 drilling program was intended to check the North Zone, a gold target discovered in 1974 and 1981 by drilling. The results obtained by Radisson confirmed the existence of this gold zone. It is located approximately 75 metres north of the Cadillac Break in sheared and altered sedimentary rocks of the Cadillac Group. (press release of November 2, 2006)
